Featured Interview (1): Gender Equality in Aviation

In addition to supporting business and industry development, Super Terminal Expo is committed to promoting core values within the sector. Considering the ongoing discussions about gender equality in this predominantly male industry, we invited several representatives from the aviation sector for interviews to share their insights.

In recognition of the coming International Women’s Day, we are excited to launch our first interview featuring Lisa Tan, Marketing Lead of Women in Aviation Singapore Chapter. Her career journey began with a deep passion for aviation and space.

Interviewee: Lisa Tan

Background and Inspiration

Q: Could you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in aviation?

From a young age, I have always been fascinated by space and the endless possibilities it holds. I am fortunate that my current position and the company I work for allow me to be deeply involved in both aviation and space. This unique blend of opportunities has truly fueled my passion for the industry. It was the prospect of shaping the future of aerospace through my role that inspired me to pursue a career in aviation, where innovation and progress are limitless.

Challenges and Resilience

Q: According to the ICAO’s 2023 global survey, the percentage of women holding positions as pilots, air traffic controllers, and maintenance technicians rose to 4.9% in 2021, up from 4.6% in 2016. As a woman in this predominantly male industry, what challenges have you faced throughout your career, and how have you overcome them?

The data speaks volumes, while the ICAO’s 2023 global survey shows a modest rise to 4.9% of women, there remains significant work to be done.

From the outset of my career, I made it a priority to not only prove my capabilities but also to excel beyond expectations. This proactive approach has been crucial in overcoming subtle biases and carving out my space in the field.

Career Achievements

Q: Can you share a specific moment or achievement in your career that you believe has contributed to advancing women in aviation?

Since 2022, I have had the honor of serving as the Marketing Communication Lead for the Women in Aviation Singapore Chapter (WAI SG). In this role, I spearheaded a comprehensive digital communication strategy that has transformed how our organization connects with its community. By building our website, promoting WAI SG’s key initiatives, we significantly expanded our reach and enhanced engagement with both members and industry partners.

This effort has actively promoted DE&I while fostering a more inclusive and empowering environment for women in the aviation industry.

Industry Progress on Gender Equality

Q: Gender equality in the workplace remains a significant issue. In your experience, how has the aviation industry addressed this, and what changes have you observed over the years?

Over the years, I’ve observed meaningful progress within the aviation sector. Expanded platforms for women, robust mentorship programs, and inclusive recruitment practices have notably increased female representation. At the same time, ongoing dialogues among industry leaders reinforce our collective commitment to a more equitable and dynamic future in aviation.

Structured mentorship programs, such as those offered by WAI SG, can play a critical role in preparing future leaders. WAI SG’s mentorship has paired over 75 women with aviation executives in Singapore over the past two years. WAI SG aims to impact over 2,000 women through its programs in the next five years.

Advice for Aspiring Women

Q: Looking to the future, what advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter the aviation field?

The aviation industry offers boundless opportunities for those ready to navigate its dynamic landscape across diverse fields from airport management and air traffic control to emerging technologies, maintenance and beyond. Embrace resilience and practice self-advocacy, because your presence alone can reshape traditional perceptions in a male-dominated industry. Focus on mastering your skills, as your competence will always speak louder than any preconceived notions about gender.

Effective Initiatives

Q: What initiatives do you believe are most effective in promoting gender equality in the aviation sector?

Promoting gender equality in the aviation sector requires a multifaceted approach that combines education, mentorship, industry partnerships, and community engagement. We have implemented several initiatives aimed at achieving these objectives:

  1. Educational Outreach: WAI-SG’s Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) introduces young girls to aviation through hands-on *STEM activities. From 30 participants in 2021 to 300 in 2023, GIAD inspires future aviators with career insights and female role models.
  2. Industry Partnerships: In 2024, WAI-SG signed an MOU with *CAAS to develop initiatives that encourage girls and young women to pursue aviation careers, with a focus on STEM and leadership.
  3. Mentorship Programs: WAI-SG has connected over 75 women with seasoned aviation leaders, providing guidance and fostering leadership to support talent retention and career growth.
  4. Scholarships & Partnerships: In collaboration with Nanyang Technological University, WAI-SG offers scholarships to support the next generation of female aviation professionals.
  5. Industry Recognition: Programs like the 20 Twenties Program by Aviation Week Network celebrate young aerospace STEM students, encouraging excellence in the field.
